SA-67: The most faithful recreation of a vintage U67 on the market.
Used by the biggest names in the industry for over half a century the U67 became known for its silky top end, mid forward presence and tight low end. This microphone is extremely versatile and a first choice for many engineers on vocals, acoustic guitars, overheads, and Piano. With a fully discrete circuit and handmade one by one in our lab in Chile the Stam Audio SA-67 is an identical sounding replica of the vintage U67. We have gone to great lengths to source parts and NOS tubes to give this microphone the true character of the original.
The Capsule
Tuned by hand and tested individually each Stam Audio SA-67 comes with a custom US made K-67 capsule. The K-67 which is also used on our SA87T and SA-800G has the exact same frequency response and timbre has a vintage K-67 capsule from the 70’s. This is the most important part of the microphone and 80% of it’s sound. Each capsule is carefully selected after thorough inspection, vocal tests and precision sweeps to produce the same frequency response.
The Tube
Each SA-67 comes with a NOS European EF86 tube which are hand selected and auditioned as the largely contribute to the low mids and smooth top end of the microphone. Unlike other cheaper currently made tubes a good NOS EF86 will never sound strident nor harsh and won’t lack the low mid information missing on other replicas. Philips/Valvo EF86 (100 USD) and Telefunken EF86 (200 USD) are available per request.
The Output Transformer
At Stam Audio sound quality comes before profit. An accurate 67 replica can not be made without the complex, expensive and gorgeous sounding AMI BV-12 output transformer. The AMI BV12 is made in the USA by AMI Magnetics and is identical to an old BV-12 both in construction, frequency response and harmonic content. Combined with a European tube and US made capsule the SA-67 MK3 will give you the same timbre and response as an old U67 at a fraction of the cost
The Circuit and Power Supply
We made sure to respect the original U67 schematic on both the microphone and power supply and used premium audio grade capacitors through a fully discrete circuit including Vishay, Polystyrene and Wima capacitors as well as Ohmite carbon resistors on the audio path. The power supply is virtually noiseless and can be used both on 115V and 230V
